Artist Biography
Filip.S is an emerging London-based creative and artist whose work explores how photography and portraiture raise and unravel questions about social stigmas.
His ongoing project, The Fluid State, investigates how members of London’s LGBTQ+ community navigate the definitions society imposes on them and, in turn, contribute to reshaping those understandings. The project examines the role of the photographic image in helping marginalised groups prove their equal worth and moral status within society through the use of assisted self-portraiture.
Born in Bydgoszcz, Poland, Filip returned to explore modern attitudes towards ‘Being LGBTQIA+ in Poland.’ The Fluid State was exhibited at Autograph ABP in 2019/20, alongside Hoxton Arches, and he created a short video piece in collaboration with Magnum Photos. His work has also been featured in The Photographers Gallery’s 2019 Free Range show, and he was selected as one of 36 finalists for East Gallery’s “Stuck Between The Lines.”
In addition to his artistic endeavours, he works as a lighting technician. This became a dive through Filip’s previous work by night, for gigs, bands, and DJs, infusing his technical expertise with a deep understanding of mood and atmosphere. He is a founding member of the South London-based collective S2AU, which is based at Photofusion, and is also involved with the queer collectives SPNK and DRTY SLK.
